I know I’m guilty of this, so I apologize for using the terms vegan and plant-based diet interchangeably. Vegan has become such a common word in today’s vocabulary that it doesn’t seem out of place to talk about our vegan diet, however “veganism” as a philosophy extends far beyond diet choices.
Veganism is the belief that animals are not here for our consumption. This goes beyond the cows, chickens and pigs on factory farms that are killed for their flesh. This includes all sentient beings including bees, sheep, and other insects that have something taken from them. Aside from avoiding meat, eggs and dairy, vegans also eliminate honey, wool, silk, leather and suede from their lives and any other food or products that cause harm to animals.
Beyonce has gotten a lot of flack the last two days for her “big” announcement. Apparently, publically announcing that her recent diet change is the reason she looks and feels so great is not newsworthy enough for even her most loyal fans. Beyonce confirmed her vegan diet has resulted in her weight loss and firmer skin. After the hyped-up spot aired, haters took to social media to let her know how they felt.
Why are food and diet choices not newsworthy? Why would announcing that she’s pregnant or going on tour be more important than her health and wellness? We’re constantly reminded of the sad state of our overall health. Rising rates of obesity and sky-rocketing cases of juvenile diabetes make their way into the news cycle. But the moment someone talks about a diet that makes them feel and look amazing without restricting calories people lose their shit.
I know this is one of the first things that flashes through people's minds when we start talking about the health benefits of a vegan lifestyle. Well if a vegan diet can help cure heart disease, diabetes and cancer why aren't doctors putting people on a strict vegan regimen? I was skeptical at the beginning too. When I first watched Forks Over Knives I immediately thought, why aren't more doctors recommending this "treatment"? The answer is simple and appalling. Education and money.
This week I made a meal plan for our dinners to help save time and money. I didn't plan this but it worked out that every night was a recipe from a different part of the world. I highly recommend using a meal plan to keep your evening meals from getting redundant. This can be especially true if you're new to the vegan lifestyle. It can be overwhelming trying to find new recipes coming from the SAD diet. Creating a meal plan helps to add variety, to try new things and to help when out shopping. All of the recipes were new... some were better than others (the potstickers did not go as well as I hoped).
HCLF, carb-up, cruelty-free, 80/10/10, raw til 4... when you first investigate the vegan lifestyle you might feel like you're listening to a foreign language. I know when we first went vegan we were quickly overwhelmed by the many different areas of thought surrounding vegan diets.
Today's blog is going to help you decipher some key terms surrounding the vegan lifestyle.
This past week we went on vacation down in the Caribbean and had a great time taking a step back from reality to really focus on ourselves and being able to relax. It was amazing being surrounding by all the tropical weather we don’t normally see here in northern Indiana. It was an amazing break but unfortunately it of course had to come to an end. Before we left we didn’t buy anything out of fear of it spoiling or going bad before we came home. To avoid throwing anything away all we bought was a box of really green bananas so by the time we got home they would be ripe enough to devour… and ripe they were.
After going vegan our lives changed dramatically, but there are some things we complain about that we really, truly love. Here's a snapshot of some of the things we catch ourselves "complaining" about the most.
I am conducting an experiment and I'm a little surprised it has taken me so long to test this theory. I've heard people say once you go vegan your PMS and cramps will all but disappear. Well, every month when Mother Nature drops by again I instantly grab the Ibuprofen. I just need two pills to last all day and the cramping is gone. So the experiment I am currently conducting is avoiding Ibuprofen. I'm trying to determine whether or not my PMS and cramps are better than before I was vegan.
I've wanted to write this post for a long time now. Probably since I shattered my own misconceptions about the affordability of living a vegan life. I think this is one of the biggest excuses people tell themselves, that they simply cannot afford to eat vegan. Well I am a self proclaimed thrifty shopper, Mike would probably call it cheap. I'm always looking for a good deal and I love telling people about it. Now, this doesn't mean I won't splurge now and then, or that I don't set money aside for fun spending. However, I believe most products are highly over-priced and are not significantly of a better quality than cheaper brands.
Mike and I got to talking one night about how people are always saying bodies are made in the kitchen. I totally believe this! You can't expect to put hours in at the gym and see results if you're still filling your body with junk. You get out what you put in, you reap what you sow, no pain no gain yada yada. But one thing I've found since going vegan is that people are constantly arguing that you can't build muscle on a plant based diet.
