Sweet Things 4 Life
Sharing our journey toward a more natural, simple, healthful lifestyle.
I’m a clean freak. You might not always be able to tell by looking at my house, but I feel best when I know my home is clean, tidy and organized. Piles of clothes, random crap and unused items littering shelf space cause me anxiety. It’s not debilitating, but my life is happier when everything is clean and in its place. Now that you know how important cleanliness is to me, I want you to toss out all your commercial cleaning products. There’s a more natural way that will get your home just as clean, if not more so, and you don’t have to pollute it with chemical sprays and soaps.
We’re surrounded by chemicals. There’s pollution in the air, fertilizers in our soils, herbicides on our food and cleaning and beauty products filling our homes. You probably don’t realize how many chemicals we encounter before we even step foot out the door. I know I didn’t until we started thinking about starting a family.
What did it for me was the Scrubbing Bubbles soap scum cleaner, the one that changes from purple to white when it has eaten away “all” the soap scum. I say “all” because I was never quite satisfied with the job it did.
I sprayed on a nice thick layer, in our small non-ventilated bathroom, and let it work. Not only did my nose burn but my eyes started to water. I ran to open some windows around the house to help with the stinging, but all I could think was, what the hell is this doing to my body?! This obviously toxic smell couldn’t be good for a woman trying to get pregnant.
This realization made me take a long look at all of my cleaning products. The ingredient lists were insanely long and I couldn’t pronounce most of the words listed. This moment started our journey to a more chemical-free home. As I mentioned at the beginning, there are already too many chemicals around us, so why fill our home with them too? While reading Alicia Silverstone’s book The Kind Mama I was struck by her idea that our homes should be a sanctuary. This concept of creating a space where our bodies can rest, detox and be at peace.
At first I was overwhelmed because I had no idea how to keep a clean home without the aid of commercial products. Luckily, I turned to Pinterest and had my answer! You can easily and inexpensively switch out all of your chemical-filled products to cleaning products made from natural ingredients, most of which you probably already have!
Over the next few weeks I’ll write about all of the cleaning and health/beauty products we’ve replaced with more natural alternatives. I’m hoping this method will keep you from feeling overwhelmed like I did. I’ve found that this is a journey for us. I started by just replacing the bathroom and kitchen cleaner with a simple, DIY all-purpose cleaner. Now we’re down to two cleaning products I just haven’t gotten around to swapping out yet. The same is true of our health/beauty supplies, I started with a single thing and now our bathroom cabinet looks like the alternative medicine section at a health food store.
Here are some of the cleaning and health/beauty supplies we’ve replaced over the last year:
Until next time,
