Sweet Things 4 Life
Sharing our journey toward a more natural, simple, healthful lifestyle.
Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like all of a sudden the benefits of coconut oil are everywhere. It’s antibacterial, a moisturizing agent and you can even cook with it. However, my favorite way to use it is in our health/beauty supplies. Today I’m sharing our deodorant, body butter and toothpaste recipes!
By simply switching over to coconut oil based products we've eliminated a ton of chemicals from our lives and we're saving money! All of these recipes are simple to make at home and most are way less expensive than anything you’ll find in stores. We use organic, cold-pressed, unrefined coconut oil, a 14 fluid oz jar at Aldi is $4.99 and it lasts us a long time (sometimes I’ll use it in baking, but mostly this is it). You can also find a larger jar of coconut oil here and have it sent right to your door. All of these products are kept in glass jars and as far as I know won’t spoil so they’ll be good for a long time.
You’re probably wondering about the effectiveness of this deodorant compared to store bought stuff. Mike and I have both tested it and found that it works just as well! I had Mike put some on before a tough, sweaty weight lifting session and afterward he smelled just as fresh as when he started. I also tested it to see how it would hold up after I'd already been sweating, and gotten a little stinky. I forgot to put it on in the morning then worked in the garden, working up quite a sweat (and smell). I put it on and it immediately killed the BO smell and made me feel drier!
Some of our other favorite uses for coconut oil are:
Massage oil – Since getting pregnant my requests for lower back and foot massages has increase exponentially! Instead of using the more expensive body butter, just using coconut oil works fantastic!
Dog moisturizer – When we brought Emma home she was dealing with some serious dry skin issues. She'd be itching constantly. When we give her a bath first we lather her up with some melted coconut oil, then wash it off with baby shampoo. The coconut oil provides additional moisture for her skin and helps kill anything that might have gotten in her coat. However, you don’t want to leave a bunch of oil on dog's skin because it can clog their pores, which is why we wash her with the baby shampoo after applying the oil. Ever since we started this routine she hasn’t had a single skin issue and her coat is incredibly soft and glossy.
Body Wash – I’m currently experimenting with a new body wash recipe using castile soap and coconut oil. I love the idea of castile soap, but I find the soap bars to be quite drying. I’ll keep you updated once I perfect the recipe!
I hope you find these recipes simple and helpful. Next time I’ll share some of our DIY, all-natural cleaning products!
Until next time,
Now enjoy these adorable pictures of Emma :)
